BOUGHTON ESTATE RIDE - NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
There was perfect riding weather for the fun ride on the Boughton Estate which was held by kind permission of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry and organised by Sue Henry. More than 40 riders completed the 10 mile route around this beautiful estate, which included fording a stream and crossing the lake over the historic bridge. It is a real treat to be allowed off road, traffic free riding in wonderful grounds, on old turf which is not normally available to riders, and all who took part reported having a great time.

A Preliminary Teaching Test (PTT) Examination preparation day was held on 5 April at Moulton College.
Rebecca Johnson BHSI and Chief Examiner presented the day which was attended mainly by candidates who were about to take their exam, but also included some who wanted to see what to expect in the exam. There was opportunity for willing candidates to teach the class flat and jumping lessons, and lead rein and lunge lessons and receive feedback on their performance and areas they need to work on before the exam. Rebecca also ran through the theory side of the exam and there was plenty of time throughout the day for questions to be answered. All who attended agreed that it was a very worthwhile day which gave them confidence going into their exam.
A day at Ascot for Sue and Monkey Boy
Chairman Sue Henry and her steed Monkey Boy were invited by R.O.R. to ride at Ascot Saturday 24th July at the King George Day Race Day see below we are Rider nos. 8
Sue writes. . .
What a magical day and what a very special privilege we were given the VIP treatment right from the star, it was absolutely brilliant and not only did we go into the 'Parade Ring' but also galloped along the racecourse in front of the Grandstands - what an experience we are still high on it!!!!!
I also thoroughly enjoyed being allowed into the high security Stable Yard area with my friend who crews for me: Pat Conlon - what a very special privilege it was fantastic being parked next to all the well known trainers and being allowed to use the 'Jockeys facilities' . I would never ever even in my wildest dreams have thought that Monkey and I would ride at Ascot Racecourse…. It was one of the best moments of my life… Monks, on the other hand, of course, remembered his past career the minute we crossed the road to the Course and as the commentator said. ' Monkey Boy' really lives up to his name!!!! It was brilliant - although Monkey Boy and I might not have given the correct impression of being 'Retrained' to me I expect he behaved very much like he would have done 17 years ago as a youngster at a racecourse - which I feel is the reason that I own him now - and he has not had a career in racing!

Nov. 97 I purchased him, and over the years created a strong bond together - despite quite a few battles of the wills etc., between us at the start - with him winning at first and me dumped ungraciously on the ground. We then invested in private lessons together and through trial and error of various disciplines discovered that we both shared a passion for long distance riding and therefore became members of Endurance G.B. and from then on have both thoroughly enjoyed 'Endurance Riding' - and each others company.

Northamptonshire’s Annual Meeting at Moulton College
was followed by an excellent presentation and demonstration by the Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, demonstrating horse and large animal rescue techniques. The crew along with others from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire have undertaken specific training from our Regional Welfare Officer, Ruth Court, aimed specifically toward animal behaviour and handling techniques for horses and farm animals for the Fire and Rescue Service. The presentation was very thought provoking, and vividly illustrated the dangers which are very often overlooked at such stressful times and the vital importance of following correct procedures to ensure the safety of bystanders and the rescue team alike and the welfare of the horse in these anxious situations. The rescue techniques demonstration by the crew using their model horse showed the professional way in which they carry out these rescues.
