FITNESS WORKSHOP – LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND
How often do we promise ourselves we are going to get fitter, but somehow never get around to it? Maybe a regular class will give you the incentive you need! BHS Leicestershire & Rutland have organised an introductory Rider Fitness Workshop with Sue Story, who as well as being a Riding Instructor is also a qualified Personal Fitness Trainer with 25 years in the fitness industry. Does your horse ever feel crooked, stiffer on one side, takes uneven steps or is unwilling to go forward? Maybe it could be your own alignment, balance or posture that is influencing your horse. By coming to the class you will improve your riding posture and position, your horse’s way of going, your core muscle stability, balance, flexibility, straightness and stamina and improve your awareness of your body thus reducing wear and tear and injuries. The aim is to run weekly workshops following on from the taster session.

CPD DAY – BROOKSBY COLLEGE
Brooksby College in Leicestershire was the venue for the autumn Continual Professional Development training day for BHS Registered Instructors and the topic ‘Understanding Functional Anatomy and its Relationship to Body Shape was delivered by Becky Johnson BHSI. This is a fascinating subject and was
well received by everybody who took part.

WARDLEY RIDE REPORT
The Wardley pleasure ride, which was organised by Alex Pyper on the Leicestershire and Rutland borders, took place on the wettest day we have had for months! However, this did not deter the enjoyment of the hardy individuals who had booked to take part, some of whom had travelled a considerable distance. They took the view that although it was wet at least it was warm and everybody came back having had a great time. The ride had options of three routes of 8, 10 or 16 miles and included a section around the picturesque Eyebrook Reservoir and some really pretty woodland tracks and grassy rides in this stunning valley.

Round Rutland Ride |
Day one of the four day Round Rutland Ride was marked with wonderful sunny weather and the groups of riders set off from Great Easton in high spirits. The first part of the day took them round the Eyebrook Reservoir, which was a stunning sight to behold on such a fine bright day. They continued through Stockerston and on to Belton-in-Rutland through Braunston and culminated at Langham, where horses and riders spent the first night.
Over 60 riders took part each day, some riding all four days and others participating on one or two days. The second day took them to Greetham, and the night was spent at Greetham Golf Club, then on to Stamford where they forded the River Welland and entered the Burghley Estate for the last night. The ride set off on Sunday morning riding past the George Hotel in Stamford, over the River Welland and culminated at Gretton. Huge amounts of preparation and organisation are involved with a ride of this length and a large amount of back up required.
A big thank you goes to Janet Benskin and her two daughters Hannah and Rachel for all their hard work in making it all possible. There was some rain on the last day, but the weather was otherwise superb and all participants enjoyed riding through wonderful countryside during the day. Once the horses were settled each night there were some very sociable evenings spent in carefully selected restaurants. |

MARTIN COLLINS BHS INSTRUCTORS’ CHALLENGE
The ‘Martin Collins BHS Instructors’ Challenge East Midlands qualifier took place at Vale View Equestrian Centre, Leicestershire on 13 March. The standard of competitors in this Combined Training competition was high, however we had clear overall winner, Caroline Peatfield from Middle Rasen, Lincolnshire. Caroline, a BHSI freelance teacher who has been a BHS Registered Instructor for 11 years, competed on 13 year old Piccolo whom she has owned for six months.
This relatively new pair has already been very successful eventing at pre-novice level and in affiliated novice dressage competitions. |

The runner up was Jenny Brown a BHSII from Loughborough riding her 9 year old ‘Braveheart BH’. Both Caroline and Jenny are delighted to have qualified and are looking forward to competing in the final at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May. |

BHS TRUSTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT!
James Buxton, one of the BHS Trustees, who lives in Leicestershire and was 70 last October, has just completed his fortieth season’s hunting with the Fernie. Brought up in County Durham, his early years were spent hunting with the Zetland and as a member of the Zetland Pony Club.
Weather and a dislocated collar bone before Christmas mean that he has only had 20 days this season since the Opening Meet (14 before): 2 seasons ago he had 44 days after the Opening Meet. He has, as usual, also enjoyed the end of season activities, completing both the Novice Class of the Fernie Team Chase and the Fun Ride section of the Harborough Ride (which is strictly non-competitive, though Horse and Hound did report that he and his beloved mare Ellie were the first to cross the finishing line.)
He exercises at least one horse and often two every day, winter and summer. Ellie has a new companion who came 5th at Garthorpe a fortnight before James bought him, so watch this space! |

SIMON SOMERS SHOWING CLINIC
We were very fortunate to have International and National Show Judge Simon Somers present a clinic at Witham Villa Riding Centre in Leicestershire. Riders and observers were given invaluable expert advice on horse and rider turnout, ring craft and conformation. Each rider was given specific advice about their horse, how to give an individual show, present their horse to show off its conformation and the classes and levels they should aim for. All who attended went away with a huge amount of useful information and are looking forward to the show season. |

LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND SCHOOLS EQUESTRIAN COMPETITION
Schools throughout Leicestershire and Rutland were invited to bring teams to the first BHS Leicestershire and Rutland Schools Equestrian Competition at Vale View Equestrian Centre on 25 October. Set up to help promote horse riding as a recognised sport in schools, we hope that through this we will start to raise the profile of equestrian sport in schools and bring equestrianism to a more prominent position in the list of 'National Sports’. The LEA County Sports Development managers sent details to all the schools in the two counties, and information was also available on the www.lrsec.co.uk website.
The organisers were delighted with the response, and a total of eighteen schools were represented. This was a two phase team show jumping competition with classes for 16 and under and 18 and under age groups, with a large number of the very capable younger age group also entering Class 2. Class 1 for sixteen and under, was an exciting and closely fought competition over a lovely but challenging course build by Caroline Moore FBHS. The winning team came from Loughborough High School and the individual winner, who was also a member of the winning team, was 11 year old Alice Murfitt riding The Pieman. This pair is a new combination, but they have already been placed in eventer and hunter trials before adding this to their list of successes. After watching Alice and pony negotiate the speed section, this could be a pair to watch!
The Class 2, 18 and under winners were a team from Oakham School – the ‘Oakham Hounds’ who had never taken part in a competition of this level before. Their Team manager Justine Smiley-Jones said ‘A big thank you from the Oakham Foxes and Hounds for organising such an exciting competition…… We had a really great time and gained useful experience of competing at this level.’ The under 18 individual winner was Jess Walker from Belvoir High School riding ‘Flower’. The full list of results is on the competition’s website: www.lrsec.co.uk Photographs available from Paul Sands - www.photokinesis.co.uk
