Derby1

From Claire Holt

After a very slow start, about a week before the event, on 10 June 2007, entries came flooding in and the committee members were becoming concerned about how they would cope if the weather changed.
However, on the morning of the ride the weather was kind and 73 riders had perfect conditions to undertake the 10-mile course. The wonderful turnout of riders, horses and ponies came from all walks of life, ranging from newly qualified doctors, riders from Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, plus Icelandic ponies, retired hunters and young eventers, to name but a few!
The ride through parkland around Boughton Estate was only possible through the generosity of the Duke of Buccleuch and the Northants committee is indebted to him for his kindness and also to the two estate managers, Michael Reynolds and Christopher Sparrow, for their help in plotting the route.
Riders who took part are also to be thanked for leaving the park in the manner in which it was found, this has left a good impression and has helped to keep the good name of the BHS in order!
There were too many helpers to mention by name but they know who they are and their help has been much appreciated. However, mention should be made of Sue Henry, the BHS Northants chairperson, who did a fantastic job in organising all the major aspects of the ride, Gerald Bailey’s catering wagon that fed the hungry riders and Jackie Green, who took some wonderful photos of riders around the park and in front of the magnificent Boughton House.
Feedback and comments from riders has been most rewarding and the committee is looking at the possibility of organising other pleasure rides in the future.”
