Pioneering route detail available for download online at Emagin.org.uk

The British Horse Society is pleased to make available, for the first time ever, detailed route downloads of two of its most popular promoted routes. These innovative documents can be downloaded, and printed onto A4 paper (or even better, tracing paper), and overlaid onto the specified 1:25,000 scaled Ordnance Survey maps. Routes can then be traced and viewed with ease in a cost effective manner. Through the use of Emagin (The British Horse Society’s Equine Mapping and Geographical Information Network), we can extract the data to scale, which is the key to success with these documents.

Historically, The British Horse Society has supplied the general public with a wealth of leaflets informing people of routes on the National Bridleway Network for years. These have always been very successful, and are packed full of vital information required for planning journeys.

Heather Holmes said: “The online route downloads will accumulate and become available in conjunction with the development of The Mapping Strategy, (launched 6 February 2008). Used in combination with the ride leaflets, these innovative documents will assist equestrians in planning their journeys with greater ease and efficiency.“This is yet another huge step forward for Emagin and will be of benefit to many equestrians. The number of people willing to travel to find safe offroad riding and carriage driving, or simply somewhere new to explore is increasing. This will provide them with the tools and guidance to do so.

” The two routes that have been made available are the popular ‘Prince Llywelyn Ride’ and ‘Sea Horse Ride’ both of which were launched in 2007 in Wales. For those who do not have access to the internet or a printer, hardcopies can still be obtained by post by contacting the Access and Rights of Way Department on 01926 707 712 or e-mail access@bhs.org.uk.
Updates and progress can be viewed at www.emagin.org.uk.

BHS petition calls for bigger say for equestrians in access law-making

The British Horse Society is calling on all equestrians to sign a petition asking the Government to give them a say in all new access and rights of way legislation.

The BHS Access Department and its regional access and bridleway officers would like riders and other horse lovers to sign the petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Equestrianaccess/

Equestrians are the most vulnerable of road users and need increased off-road access for their safety and the welfare of their horses. Horse riding and driving provides healthy outdoor exercise, which the Government is keen to encourage.

It is enjoyed by more than four million people in the UK and is the second biggest land-based industry, but equestrians have not been included in recent access-creating legislation which would help make them safer and encourage healthy outdoor recreation.

Mark Weston, BHS Director of Access, Safety and Welfare, said: "It is vital that we use all means available to impress on the Government that equestrians need more and safer access. E-petitions are one way of showing the demand, along with writing to our MPs."

The recent petition calling for amendments to the equestrian sections of the Highway Code attracted just under 20,000 signatures, showing the amount of concern there was in the equestrian community.
